Things to do in Noosa with kids or without
Courtney Atkinson, 3-time Noosa Triathlon winner, Olympian and all round nice guy recently visited Noosa with his wife and two children, spending 48 hours exploring beyond Hastings Street. Read his wife Kinga's blog below to see what they found...
I love it when Courtney calls me at work and says “Hurry home, we are going away!” Only a two-day trip but we have lots to see and do! Noosa here we come!
Accommodation sorted: Peppers Noosa Resort and Villas. We stayed in the three-bedroom self-contained villa. So much space! For those heading to the Noosa Triathlon (26-30 October 2016), this is the perfect spot. The 25m lap pool allows you to swim train and the trails directly behind the villas allow for some scenic runs. The hotel offers a buggy service that helps you get from the villa to Hastings Street a little quicker. Otherwise, it is a steep walk down.
The kids also enjoyed the family pool. It is heated, but only to 26 degrees, which was a little chilly for my little munchkins.
My favorite part was the buffet breakfast in the View on Little Hastings Restaurant. It has an alfresco feel, views across Laguna Bay and is comfortable enough with our little ratbags. The resort caters well for both families and couples.
A path directly behind the villas takes you to Laguna Lookout. Walk or run and enjoy the gorgeous views of Noosa, the waterways and coastline. From here you can also walk down to Hastings Street. Alternatively, you can also reach it by car.
With no time to waste, we were off to our first adventure: mountain bike riding. Bike On is a great little business specialising in providing bike hire and mountain bike education. These guys have over 300 bikes (mountain bikes, road bikes, hybrid bikes, e-bikes, cruisers, kids bikes, chariot trailers and baby seats). An alternative at Noosa Triathlon is to hire a bike (carbon bikes available) and save on luggage.
We loved our one-hour tour of the mountain bike track at Tewantin on the Wooroi trails (alternative map). As strange as this might be, especially having a dad who rides bikes every day, this was Chloee’s first time on the dirt trails. And no surprise, she loved it! Leo (he’s only four years old) was still a little hesitant but ended up exploring on his own around the park rather than on the trails. And at the end of the day, he did not want to go home!
The trails are also perfect for some trail running. Courtney’s words, not mine!
Dinner time. Keen to see what Noosa Boathouse at Noosaville was all about. It's located literally on the Noosa River with fantastic sunset views. The staff were friendly and fast. The pelicans entertained the kids allowing Courtney and I to eat our dinner in peace and quiet.
Super impressed with Noosaville - lots of waterfront cafes on the opposite side of the road but nevertheless with water views. There are lots of water activities, from BBQ boats to jet-skis, a playground for the kids, and it's conveniently located on the bike course for Noosa Triathlon. A great alternative to Noosa Heads at Noosa Triathlon time.
Day 2, no time to waste. An early start and definitely an experience I won’t forget! Kanu Kapers you took our breath away. How have we not discovered this place before! The only explanation is the photos don’t do it justice.
A hidden secret in the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park, Noosa Everglades is a must for any Noosa traveller. The Everglades represent an ancient waterway that has existed unchanged for thousands of years. Kanu Kapers allows you to kayak on your own or as part of a tour exploring the spectacular waterways filled with millions of purple water lilies, pelicans and deserted beach inlets. The water is a little brown from the tea trees but warmer than the ocean. This tour was the highlight of our trip!
Kanu Kapers provide a navigation brief and a map to help those on the self-guided tour. There’s always a kayak here or there so if you do get a little disorientated, all you need to do is ask.
Things to consider:
1. Do a full day tour rather than a half day. Take your time, stop and enjoy. Heaps of little beaches to stop and relax on.
2. Kids will struggle on their own so double up (even my 9-year-old gave up).
3. Consider camping overnight. Kanu Kapers provide everything aside from food.
4. Brings lots of sun block and cover up. Legs get very burnt! Don’t forget lots of water and food. Tours offer an Esky.
